The Rebild Flag

The Rebild flag bears the constellation known as the Big Dipper as a symbol of emigration from Denmark to America. Being red, white and blue, it combines the colors of the flags of both nations.
The Big Dipper was chosen to symbolize emigration because it can be seen from all points across the northern hemisphere, in Denmark as well as North America.
- The blue background symbolizes the unknown and eternity.
- White symbolizes truth, innocence and purity.
- Red symbolizes solidarity, blood and honor.
We imagine that one of the last things the emigrant did before leaving was to look up at the familiar night sky and reflect upon what the future might bring. On the journey across the ocean he was able to follow the Big Dipper, and, upon arrival in North America he could look up into the night sky and see that it was still there, a familiar face in a new world.
Hans Toksvig designed the Rebild flag in 1979.
